It's time to elect the 2007 Board of Directors for the Chapel Hill Jaycees.  Please join us at on Monday, October 23 at 7pm to hear the candidates speak and to elect new officers.  We have one contested election (see below) and we will be able to ask questions of both candidates for that position.  If you're considering joining the Chapel Hill Jaycees, this is the perfect opportunity to come out and learn more about the organization.  Our meetings are held at the Chapel Hill Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, 104 S. Estes Drive.  Please e-mail Melissa Feder at MembershipVP@chapelhilljaycees.org for more information about the meetings.

Boys Home Stuff Drive
Date & Time: Now through November 1

We are in the final month for the Lake Waccamaw Boys & Girls Home Stuff Drive!!!  So far, we've had some really great donations, but there's still plenty more items on the list that they need!  Take a look around your house and see what you have to donate - just think about the many smiles you will put on the boys' faces!  Also, the Seeds of Change bucket is back by popular demand at all General Membership Meetings until November 1st.  If you don't want to purchase something for the boys, please feel free to donate that loose change from around the house, car, or even what was in your wallet/pocket/purse from the day!  It's not often that these kids get new things that aren't second hand, so we're going to buy them brand new items with the money you donate.  Last, but certainly not least, we'll be visiting the Boys Home on Saturday, November 4th, so mark your calendar!  We'll be bringing lunch to them and playing board games (unless it's nice enough to be outside!).  Plus, we'll need some help bringing the donations to the cottage.  If you're interested in donating items or attending the Cottage visit (or Both!) e-mail Kristi Baleno at CommunityDevelopmentVP@chapelhilljaycees.org.  This will be our last meeting before we visit the boys, so remember to bring your donations and contributions to the meeting!

Here's the Wish List that the NC Jaycees are trying to fulfill.  These items are essential to making life at the Jaycees Cottage better!  Check around your house to see what you might have to offer!

Assisting the Raleigh Jaycees with their Haunted House, The Manor at Possum Creek
Date & Time: Saturday, October 28, 4:30pm-Midnight

Come out to help the Raleigh Jaycee's draw screams from paying customers! The Raleigh Jaycee's are in need of help with manpower for their yearly Haunted House. This year’s theme is "The Manor at Possum Creek" with a slant towards the Hillbilly/Redneck. They have a need for people to work any positions that they feel comfortable with. These positions range from selling tickets to scaring patrons out of their wits. We are invited to assume anything that is open when we get there and have fun with it! If you have a specific job in mind send Charles Krupinski an email (cekrup@gmail.com), and he will try his best to secure it for you. Visit www.jchauntedhouse.com for more information!  The House is open 6 to 7 for kid’s night, and then the lights drop till Midnight. We will carpool from Mardi Gras at 4:30 to arrive in time for makeup! If you wish to drive yourself, from Mardi Gras it takes the full 30 minutes to drive.

Guests are welcome to all of our events and meetings.

News and Notes

2007 Board Elections

It is time to elect new officers for the 2007 Board of Directors for the Chapel Hill Jaycees.  Elections will be held at 7pm on Monday, October 23.  You must be present to vote, must be a dues paying member of the Chapel Hill Jaycees, and anyone arriving after the start of the meeting (7pm) will not be eligible for voting.  There is one contested election, and these candidates will each have time to talk about why they want to be elected to the position they have been nominated for.  The candidates are:  David Curl - Membership VP, Joe Beal - Treasurer, and Mary Johnson & Mark Patterson - both nominated for Community Development Vice President.  That's right, we have a contested election!  Please read statements from both Mark & Mary below about why they would like to be elected to the position of Community Development Vice President:

Mary Johnson
Why I want to be community VP

I would like to fill the role of community VP because I want to be more involved in community service.  In Ann Arbor I volunteered at the soup kitchen and worked on the national food survey among food kitchen/food pantry clients.  It's really satisfying to do work that leads directly to putting food in people's stomachs.

My vision for the role of Jaycees in service to the community

After I put my name down for the community development position, I did a lot of research on volunteer opportunities in the area.  The ones that appeal to me most focused on preparing food for the hungry, animal advocacy (e.g., walking pets at shelters), and advocacy for women and children (e.g., volunteers who play with children at shelters for victims of abuse).  That said, I think the volunteer activities will primarily be determined by group interest.  My preliminary plan is to present a variety of community opportunities ideas to the group, organize volunteer events with different organizations, and focus future efforts on the community service projects that are most successful in terms of our enthusiasm and the needs of the organization.

I think it's important to expand our base of community service, to maintain our focus as a civic as well as social organization.  I also think volunteer events that are publicized outside the Jaycees could be a great opportunity for recruitment.

Related background and experience

In the past year, I've served as VP of social events for the post-doc, student, and trainee organization at EPA; I also served on the holiday committee.

As member of the garden club in college, I participated in and organized events such as chopping wood for a camp that sponsors inner city children, earth day events, and launching a campus wide recycling program with the help of local artists and students.  I also worked for an organization that sponsored recreational activities for mentally challenged adults.  We ran game nights, cooking nights, trips to concerts, and bowling.

Less interesting, I've managed many many projects throughout my academic and professional career.  I've also served on several academic steering committees for projects and a departmental curriculum committee.

Mark Patterson

Hey Chapel Hill Jaycees! First, I wanted to thank all of you in nominating me for this position. Having only been a member for a few months, it really felt great to have my peers recognize me in this way, and I'm excited of the possibility to be able to contribute as a leader to our great CH Jaycees Chapter.

That being said, allow me to get on with business! I am particularly interested in the position of Community Development VP, since my reason in joining the Jaycees was to get more directly involved in community service at the grass roots level.   My involvement in the CH Parade Committee has helped build my confidence as a future Jaycee board member.  This particular project has also been a great opportunity to interact with both Jaycees members, and groups in the community, and am excited of the possibility of making this 'our' event next year.   I have really enjoyed this project,  and would like to carry these skills with me to other project venues if I am elected a Community Development VP.

I would specifically like to recognize the great work that Kristi Baleno has done, and I have some large shoes to fill! As a leader, she has been inspiring, enthusiastic, kind-hearted, and compassionate…qualities especially important within community service. It would be great to follow in her footsteps. If elected, I would help lead and nurture the projects she has built over the past year, in addition to integrating more collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, one of my favorite community organizations.

Outside my tasks as the Community Development VP, I would also be eager to contribute my ideas and efforts, as well as communicate your ideas to the board, in order to continually improve the running of our organization.   Thanks for your support!

2006 Chapel Hill Carrboro Holiday Parade Committee

Interested in helping out the 2007 Holiday Parade Committee?  Please contact Mark Patterson at mpatters97@gmail.com.  They are looking for people to help before the parade and the day of the parade.  We will help with entering information into a database, organizing all of the entries that we have, and on the day of the parade, be the man & woman power making sure the parade goes off without a hitch.  The Committee has been working very hard since early this year and is now in need of getting the rest of the chapter involved.  Any time you can give is appreciated!
