New Member Orientation Date: Monday, 7/25 Time: 6p-6:45p
You're invited to the orientation for our members. It will be in same room where we hold our meetings, at the Chamber of Commerce. If you've joined the Jaycees this year or you've been a member for a while and are looking to refresh your memory then this is a great way to learn about the big Jaycees picture. Guests are welcome to come and see what we're all about. Joel Pearce, a NC Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senator, will be joining us to tell you all about being a Jaycee. Pizza will be provided. Please e-mail Christina Jaromin if you plan to attend so she knows how many pizzas to order.
Meeting Reminder: Mayor of Carrboro Speaking Date: Monday, 7/25 Time: 7p-8p
We're excited to announce that Mayor Mike Nelson is scheduled to be the guest speaker at our meeting on Monday night. This meeting immediately follows the member orientation. Mayor Nelson will be talking about his political career and being a young person in politics. FYI: We generally adjourn to a local eatery afterwards to socialize.
Wine Tasting with the Young Professionals Network Date: Thursday, 7/28 Time: 5:30p-7p
The Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Network (YPN) will meet at A Southern Season for a Wine Tasting. The YPN is for people aged 21-40. Please e-mail Tracy Hager if you plan to attend.
Tubing on the Dan River Date: Saturday, 7/30 Time: 8a-4p
We'll be tubing on the Dan River...we did it last year and it's back by popular demand. We'll be meeting at Carrboro Plaza at 8am on Saturday morning and heading out to the River from there. It will take about 2 hours to get to the river, and then we'll float down. We should be back around 4pm. Be sure to wear your swimsuit and tennis shoes you don't mind taking in the water! You'll also probably want to bring a cooler with lunch in it, as we'll be floating down through lunch time. The cost for the day will be the cost of the tube and gas money for your driver, if you chose to carpool with us. Please contact Christina Jaromin if you plan to attend. She also has a sheet of things you should bring with you! For more information about tubing on the Dan, click on the link in the header.
Durham Bulls Game Fundraiser (Selling Beer) Date: Thursday, 8/11 Time: 5:15p-10p
This is a really fun fundraiser for our chapter! We will be running one of the beer carts at the Durham Bulls game. The Chapel Hill Jaycees will receive 11.25% of the net sales generated from the cart that we run. Volunteers will need to be at the athletic park by approximately 5:15-5:30 and we usually finish up by about 9:30 (depends on the length of the game). Volunteers get to keep an equal portion of whatever tips we make (that means $$$ in your pocket!), get a coupon for a free meal, and even have an opportunity to watch parts of the game! Contact Melissa Feder if you're interested in helping out.
NC Jaycees Executive Meeting: Duke Cancer Center Date: Saturday, 8/20

RSVP to Brody Underhill so that they know how many people to expect for lunch. His cell phone is 619-5413.
AIDS Walk and Ride Date: Saturday, 8/20 Time: 6p
A little AIDSWALK history….
The Triangle has seen ten New Year’s Days come and go, and thousands of clients come through the AAS-C doors, from the time when the first walkers took their first steps in the first AIDS Walk in the Raleigh-Durham area. On a mild Sunday afternoon in the first week of December 1995, more than 1,800 people left the State Capitol grounds for a one-mile walk and finished the walk having raised $50,000 when the last walker crossed the finish line at The Church of the Good Shepherd on Hillsborough Street.
From year-to-year, new participants have joined veteran walkers to remember those lost, those living, and those we must protect while taking messages from such keynote speakers as AIDS Activist Mary Fisher, AIDS Advocate Jeanne White Ginder, mother of Ryan White, and the beloved local D-J Big E. Over the years AIDSWALK has helped raise more than $600,000.00 for local AIDS service organizations, thereby touching the lives of thousands of people living with HIV.
Participation and funds raised have grown in line with walker participation since 1995. With an eye on historical event markers, and community input, AIDSWALK adds the RIDE this year….
Welcome AIDSWALK + RIDE!
I invite everyone to join the Jaycees Team in downtown Raleigh as AIDSWALK goes the distance. It is the same day as the Duke Cancer Center tour--so if you're in town for the tour it would be a short drive over to Raleigh for the walk. For more information, please email Kim Winson (secretary@chapelhilljaycees.org). Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who would be interested in the project.
Our Jaycees Team will be participating in the one-mile walk. Individuals can also join the Jaycees Team online at http://aidswalkandride.kintera.org/teamjaycees . Donations to the AIDSWALK are also highly appreciated. You can donate online at
http://tinyurl.com/a4anl. Matching contributions are also accepted, please email Kim at the above address for more information. I'd like to add that the Duke Pediatric Infectious Disease department has registered a team. This department includes the Pediatric AIDS unit...1/2 of our funds collected goes to them to support the services provided by this unit.
AIDS is one of the top killers of individuals who are of Jaycee age. AIDS services encompass more than medical treatment. They include support services like a food pantry and emergency financial assistance. This walk is a great way to show our support for AIDS services here in North Carolina.
Guests are welcome to all of our events and meetings. |
