Welcome to our new member Kristi Baleno! We're glad to have you in the chapter! We'd also like to introduce Aaron Easley and re-introduce Nicole Davidson, our guests at the last meeting.
Note: This week's newsletter is lengthy...it might be easier to read if you print it out.
Events
Cuisine Night: Penang Restaurant Date: Thursday, 7/21 Time: 7p-9p
Delicious
Malaysian/Thai food on Franklin St. This was one of our most popular
cuisine nights last year and is a restaurant not to be missed! RSVP to Melissa Brumback.
Eat at Joe's Date: Saturday, 7/23 Time: 2p-10p
Come one and all to Joe Beal's
to cook out on the grill. Eat, drink and enjoy good company. He will
provide the grill, dogs, burgers and some sides. Bring anything you
would like to cook, a side dish to share, tunes and BYOB. The deck is
covered so rain won't be a factor. E-mail Joe Beal for directions to his place.
Baseball in the 'Boro Date: Sunday, 7/24 Time: 3p-9p
Attend a baseball game at Greensboro's brand spankin' new stadium, the First Horizon Field. You also get a new ball to commemorate it! Check out http://www.gsohoppers.com. Meet at Mardi Gras on 54 at 3:00 and carpool to Greensboro. Email Tim Miller for more information.
New Member Orientation Date: Monday, 7/25 Time: 6p-6-45p
You're invited to the upcoming
orientation for our members. If you've joined the Jaycees this year or
you've been a member for a while and are looking to refresh your memory
then this is a great way to learn about the big Jaycees picture. Guests
are welcome to come and see what we're all about. Joel Pearce,
a NC Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senator, will be joining us to
tell you all about being a Jaycee. Pizza will be provided. Please
e-mail Christina Jaromin if you plan to attend so she knows how many pizzas to order.
Wine Tasting with the Young Professionals Network Date: Thursday, 7/28 Time: 5:30p-7p
The Chamber of Commerce's
Young Professionals Network (YPN) will meet at A Southern Season for a
Wine Tasting. The YPN is for people aged 21-40. Please e-mail Tracy Hager if you plan to attend.
Tubing on the Dan River Date: Saturday, 7/30 Time: 8a-4p
We'll be tubing on the Dan River...we
did it last year and it's back by popular demand. We'll be meeting at
Carrboro Plaza at 8am on Saturday morning and heading out to the River
from there. It will take about 2 hours to get to the river, and then
we'll float down. We should be back around 4pm. Be sure to wear your
swimsuit and tennis shoes you don't mind taking in the water! You'll
also probably want to bring a cooler with lunch in it, as we'll be
floating down through lunch time. The cost for the day will be the cost
of the tube and gas money for your driver, if you chose to carpool with
us. Please contact Christina Jaromin if
you plan to attend. She also has a sheet of things you should bring
with you! For more information about tubing on the Dan, click on the
link in the header.
Durham Bulls Game Fundraiser (Selling Beer) Date: Thursday, 8/11 Time: 5:15p-10p
This
is a really fun fundraiser for our chapter! We will be running one of
the beer carts at the Durham Bulls game. The Chapel Hill Jaycees will
receive 11.25% of the net sales generated from the cart that we run.
Volunteers will need to be at the athletic park by approximately
5:15-5:30 and we usually finish up by about 9:30 (depends on the length
of the game). Volunteers get to keep an equal portion of
whatever tips we make (that means $$$ in your pocket!), get a coupon
for a free meal, and even have an opportunity to watch parts of the
game! Contact Melissa Feder if you're interested in helping out.
AIDS Walk and Ride Date: Saturday, 8/20 Time: 6p
The Jaycees Team is taking form. I'd like to extend my sincere thanks to the following people who have joined and/or donated to the cause:
Todd Dawson Tim Miller Amber Neill John Reeves Erin Robinson
Together,
we have raised $170 in just two weeks! Wow! Several other chapters have
also shown interest in supporting the AIDS Walk; they include
Greensboro, Hickory, and Raleigh. It would be incredible if the Jaycees
Team had representatives from several different NC Jaycees chapters.
I invite everyone to join
us in downtown Raleigh as AIDSWALK goes the distance. It is the same
day as the Duke Cancer Center tour--so if you're in town for the tour
it would be a short drive over to Raleigh for the walk. For more information, please email Kim Winson (secretary@chapelhilljaycees.org). Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who would be interested in the project.
Our Jaycees Team will be participating in the one-mile walk. Individuals can also join the Jaycees Team online at http://aidswalkandride.kintera.org/teamjaycees . Donations to the AIDSWALK are also highly appreciated. You can donate online at http://tinyurl.com/a4anl. Matching contributions are also accepted, please email Kim at the above address for more information.
AIDS
is one of the top killers of individuals who are of Jaycee age. AIDS
services encompass more than medical treatment. They include support
services like a food pantry and emergency financial assistance. This
walk is a great way to show our support for AIDS services here in North
Carolina.
Guests are welcome to all of our events and meetings. |

News and Notes
Mayor of Carrboro
We're excited to announce that Mayor Mike Nelson
is scheduled to be the guest speaker at our next meeting on 7/25. This
is the meeting that immediately follows the member orientation. He will
be talking about his political career and being a young person in
politics.
Convention Coming Soon The second installment of the NC Jaycees State Convention will be returning this fall. It will be held in Winston-Salem, Sept. 23-25.
It's a fun way to meet Jaycees from other chapters; there are also
seminars about topics ranging from networking to recruiting to
polishing your resume. Elections for State President and the VPs will
also be held. Convention closes with an awards and recognition banquet.
Then we party 'till the wee hours of the morning. Cost is $55 for early
bird registration, hotel room is additional. There will be a carpool.
Call Brody Underhill, the State Director, for more information. His cell is 619-5413.
A Thank You from the Ronald McDonald House
The
Chapel Hill Ronald McDonald House sent the chapter the following
thank-you note: "We appreciate your willingness to support the Ronald
McDonald House by preparing a meal for our families! Your home-cooked
meal helped to make our House even more comforting for the families who
call our house 'home.' We hope it was a fun experience for everyone and
that you will come again! Thanks for the cookout dinner for the
families."
We'd like to add our thanks to everyone who has volunteered thus far this year: Todd Dawson Kristin Eaton Melissa Feder Kendra Fuller Terry Green Sara Hogan Christina Jaromin Brody Underhill Kim Winson Sharon Worthington
Special thanks to Peter DeStabler, the RMH Chairperson, and Christina, for running it in his absence. The next RMH dinner is scheduled for August. Everyone is welcome to come.
I (Kim) did the list from memory, my apologies if I didn't list your name.
