June 12, 2005 This Week in Jaycees

Events

Meeting Reminder
Date: Monday, June 13
Time: 7p-8p

Come to the meeting Monday night. Our guest speaker is Tom Lamont, the Civic Club Director of the Lake Waccamaw Boy's Home. (He's the liason for civic clubs like the Jaycees.) He will talk about the Boy's home and how the Jaycees are involved with it. As part of our continuing involvement with the Boy's Home, we're asking members to bring sodas and wrapped snacks to the meeting. The Boy's Home has a list of requested donations, and this month they need food and drink. If you are considering bringing a donation, please be sure to arrive at the meeting on time. Mr. Lamont is collecting them and he may not be able to stay for the entire meeting as he has a long drive back to the Boy's Home. Please contact Christina Jaromin if you have any questions about the donations.

Cuisine Night
Date: Thursday, June 16th
Time: 5:30p-7:30p

We're meeting at the "Mellow Mushroom" this month. Not "international" cuisine but some good semi-local flavor. Just a block away from our meeting location on Franklin St. They've got a crazy website: http://www.mellowmushroom.com. Good pizzas (and other food) and beer. Mmm. RSVP to Melissa Brumback.

Return of the Fish
Date: Monday, June 20th
Time: 7p-9p

Random Sushi Night is back with a vengeance. We’ll be eating sushi and other yummy food at Akai Hana, as always. Please e-mail Christina Jaromin if you plan to attend. Also, they will NOT separate the check, so it is NECESSARY TO BRING CASH.

Jaycees Social and Recruit Night, a Cook-out
Date: Thursday, June 23rd
Time: 6:30p-8p

Mark your calendars: we're partying poolside at the Southern Village Apartments. Burgers, hot dogs, beer. Ahh, beer! Come on out to the Southern Village Apt pool and meet 'n greet. We're expecting a huge crowd so we need all of the members to come out. This is a chance to tell prospects why we ROCK! The contact person is Melissa Brumback; her email address is mbrumback@mindspring.com.

Drag Bingo! (Note: The website plays music)
Date: Friday, June 24th
Time: 8p-10p

The Alliance of AIDS Services – Carolina sponsors Drag Bingo at the Durham Armory. It's for a great cause, there are prizes, and yes, the drag queens perform. It's a hoot. Tickets are $15. Christina Jaromin, Tim Miller, Kim Winson, and Sharon Worthington went last month and had a blast! Ask them about it if you’re curious, or e-mail Christina Jaromin for more information. Parking is available across from the Armory, for $2. Carpoolers will be meeting in Chapel Hill, email Christina.

Durham Bulls Games Concessions
Date: Varies, see description
Time: Varies, see description

There are only 5 more games left for our summer Durham Bulls Game fundraiser. We are signed up to run a beer cart on June 30, and August 11 (all Thursday nights). The games have been super-busy, so we need at least 4-5 people for each date. If you'd like to sign up for any of these dates, let me know. If you have not yet signed up for one, please consider it as it is a lot of fun and a major help to our Chapter. We are also working at First Base Hits concession stand on Friday, July 15 and Sunday, August 28. This is a very high-traffic concession stand, so we need 12-14 people for each of these dates. Please let me know if you are available to work on one or both of these days. Check the online calendar for information on times for these games. Alternatively, you can call or email Melissa Feder with any questions. Thanks in advance for your help!

News and Notes

New Jaycees Shirts
There are some cool new Jaycees T-shirts available for ordering. One is a t-shirt, the other is a button-down "camp" shirt. The t-shirt costs $15, the camp shirt costs $40. To place your order, bring the money (checks made out to NC Jaycees) to Brody Underhill at the membership meetings on June 13th or the 27th. Call Brody at 619-5413 if you have any questions. I *finally* got the images to work, yay! So take a look...

Calling for new events and projects

Is there something that YOU want to do with the Jaycees, but we haven’t done yet this year? Let one
of the board members know! We’d love to work with you to coordinate an activity for the group. What's in it for you? If you suggest it, then you get to do what you want to do...*and* with the help of the Jaycees. That's how Random Sushi Night got started...it's how a lot of our projects and events get rolling. Either email President Amber and she'll pass it along to the appropriate person or write the idea in the suggestion box below.

Happy Birthday to Us!
Chapel Hill is turning THREE this September and we're gonna throw a party. Everyone's invited...yes, you too! We want dignitaries, fellow Jaycees, past Jaycees, prospective Jaycees...everyone! If you have a suggestion for someone to invite, email Amber Neill.

Website Updates
Our website got a few new updates this week, most of them in the Documents section. We now have our policies up, sample press releases, press release templates, some "Jaycee Slang," and plenty more. Now it's easier to retrieve necessary forms and information for our chairpeople and officers. The newsletter archive is updated weekly. Thanks go to Rob Thompson, our webmaster.

New Pics
Rob also updated the Images section with pics from the Camping Trip and the Beach Music Fest. There's also an updated picture of the Chapel Hill Board of Directors, along with a few NC Jaycees State Board members hanging with us too. Enjoy!

Who's on the Board of Directors?
Things have changed a bit since January and a lot has stayed the same. Our current officers are:

President: Amber Neill
Management VP: Melissa Feder
Individual Development VP: Kendra Fuller
Community Development VP: Tim Miller
Membership VP: Open (If you're interested or would like to learn more, please email Amber)
Chairman of the Board: Sharon Worthington
State Director: Brody Underhill
Treasurer: Christina Jaromin
Secretary: Me :) (Kim Winson)

Look for the committees and project chairpeople in next week's newsletter.

NC Monthly Newsletter
The June newsletter is up. In it, you'll see an article from James January; there's also an update from Chapel Hill in there. FYI: The articles are alphabetical by author. Check it out!

NC Jaycees Leader
This is a quarterly newspaper-style publication from the state. It contains updates from the state level officers as well as "news and notes" from other NC Jaycees chapters from around the state. If you are a member, you should have received it. If you did not get your copy, contact Kim Winson (myself) and I will notify the person in charge of the mailing list.

Did You Know...
...Board Meetings are open to all members.  They are held monthly.  There's one in July, date TBD.
